RICHMOND, Va., April 21, 2010 — With an estimated 31 percent of its employees spending over two hours a day commuting to work, Washington Gas is collaborating with Telework!VA, a program developed by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), to implement teleworking as a new business strategy.
Washington Gas, a natural gas distribution company serving over one million customers in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, employs approximately 1,300 people, 700 of whom work at its Springfield, Va., operations center. The company’s initial goal is to have 75 employees teleworking four times per month, removing more than 3,000 cars from highways each year.
"Our new Reduce the Commute program is a practical and effective response to employee feedback and to today’s individual and business needs," said Melissa Adams, Division Head of Sustainability and Business Development. "Combined with other work-life balance and sustainable business practices, this program will help us maximize productivity, protect our environment and reduce traffic in our region."
Telework!VA is a cooperative effort between DRPT and private sector businesses that offers technical assistance and up to $50,000 in one-time financial incentives to qualified employers that start or expand a telework program. Telework programs can provide highway congestion relief, increase business productivity and help employees save time and money on commuting costs.
"Through technology, we have the opportunity to take commuters off Virginia highways and help employers offer new work flexibility and cost savings to employees in a tough economy," said DRPT Director Thelma Drake. "Virginia employers can minimize the cost of highway congestion and commuting on their bottom line by implementing a telework program through Telework!VA."
